A village cosy (nice change from the 'voonderble vorldt of art'). The elderly mystery writer Priscilla Pringle -- Poison at the Parsonage, etc. -- gets involved in a real murder plot. The characters (local gentry, central figures, etc.) are more unappealing than usual in a cosy. Amusing book, but not much more than an expanded short story.

Agreed. There is little detection here, Appleby's work is very pedestrian, and the normally high literary quality of Innes' allusions seem attenuated. Perhaps he was aiming for the womens' magazine market..
