Chambers, Whitman

Page history last edited by Randal Brandt 5 months, 3 weeks ago

Elwyn Whitman Chambers (1896-1968) was an American author. He was born on December 8, 1896 in Stockton, California and graduated with an A.B. degree from the University of California as a member of the Class of 1920, and then stayed on to do graduate work. Prior to completing his education, he served as a naval officer in World War I, and afterward worked as a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, the San Francisco Bulletin, and the Oakland Enquirer. He spent seventeen years in Hollywood as a screenwriter for Paramount, United Artists, Universal, and Warner Bros. Chambers was married twice, first to Mary Gertrude Strother in 1921 and then, after they divorced in 1939, to Marjorie Marie Stalker. He died on July 20, 1968 in Los Angeles, California.

Apparently writing what he knows, Chambers sets several novels in the milieu of San Francisco Bay Area newspaper reporters. He rarely establishes definite locales, yet the evidence points to Oakland as the scene of most of the action.

Whitman Chambers also published short stories in pulp magazines.

The Campanile Murders, Murder for a Wanton, Once Too Often and The Come-On were all adapted into movies.
