Taylor, Phoebe Atwood as Alice Tilton - Cold Steal (1939)

Leonidas Witherall, ex-teacher and Shakespeare look-alike, has been on a round-the-world trip with some of his inheritance, while his friends at home build him a new house with the rest. Not until the last morning of his journey does he encounter real excitement; but it makes up for it all when the Dalton train is enlivened by a glamorous blonde and a sinister woman in grey. The blonde inveigles him; the woman in grey takes a more direct approach and bops him on the head.

Leonidas recovers in time to get off the train and go in search of his new house, which comes complete with a corpse. Who had access to the garage? Well, as it turns out, almost everybody has been holding open house in Leonidas's remarkable domicile. Life is fast and furious in small-town Massachusetts, but even with time out for the welcome wagon, a pushy refrigerator salesman and a visit by the Campfire Girls, Leonidas and Cassie Price manage to muddle through, scoop up the girl and the woman in grey, and save the day at the mayoral election that evening. This is high farce, expertly handled.

Jon.

“Tell me, how many varieties of Dalton are there?”

“Fifteen,” Leonidas said.

“Seventeen,” Cassie corrected him. “East Dalton, West Dalton, North Dalton, South Dalton, Dalton Hills, Dalton Farms, Dalton Centre, Dalton Village, Dalton Falls, Dalton Upper Falls, Dalton Lower Falls, Daltondale, Daltonville, Daltonham, Dalton Landing, Daltonwood. How many is that?”

“Enough," Leonidas said. “Do I gather that you got to the wrong Dalton, Miss Horn?”
