Adrian, Jack (Ed) - Detective Stories From The Strand Magazine (1991)
With a Foreword by Julian Symons
Twenty-six stories, ranging from the obscure to the extremely well-known, and covering a period from 1904 to 1948. Apart from the Holmes stories, The Strand was not especially noted for detective fiction, and these represent the best of a relatively small set. Unfortunately not all of them are detective stories -- the ring-ins are noted with an asterisk below, while those which conceal information from the reader or rely on devices such as Poisons Unknown to Science get a question-mark -- but those which are may include some unfamilar and pleasant surprises. A brief biography of each writer is given, and an Introduction sets out the history of the magazine. Symons's brief Foreword appears to have been merely a way to get his name on the cover.
