Bruce Graeme was a pseudonym for Graham Montague Jeffries, who also wrote as Peter Bourne and David Graeme. He was born in London and served in the Queen's Westminster Rifles in 1918. He married Lorna Helene Louch in 1925. He was a film producer and reporter. His son Roderick Jeffries is also a mystery writer.

His series characters were Detective Sergeant Robert Mather, Superintendent William Stevens, Inspector Pierre Allain and Theodore I Terhune, a bookseller.
