HRF Keating 100 Best Crime & Mystery Books (1987)

HRF Keating stated in introduction:

No author should be represented by more than three titles.

(Only) books with crime in them that are not pure thrillers, nor espionage novels, nor horror stories, nor stories of pure suspense. And certainly not novels proper that happen to have a crime in them

He also excluded authors that are no longer easily found: Fergus Hume R., Austin Freeman, Alice Tilton, Freeman Wills Crofts and Stuart Palmer.

I'm not sure how much the later books on this list have to do with GAD - in fact I think the list demonstrates dramatically how the goalposts were moved in about 1960 so that the 'best' detective stories became something radically different from what they had been. Of the books in this list from 1960 onward that I know, I can only find about three that I would call detective stories in the GAD sense.

Also, of course, excluding authors that are 'not easily found' guarantees that they will go on not being easily found; whereas a recommendation from Keating might have been enough to prompt a reissue of some of the missing greats.
