Alan James Herbert Hunter (1922-2005) was an English bookseller, who wrote a long series of mysteries about Inspector George Gently. Hunter was born in Norfolk and studied advertising. He served as an aircraft technician during WW2 and married Adelaide Cubitt in 1944, working in her father's bookshop before setting up his own in Norwich in 1950. Hunter also reviewed crime fiction for the Eastern Daily Press. His series character is Inspector (later Chief Superintendent) George Gently.
