Rath, Virginia

Page history last edited by Bill Kelly 14 years, 11 months ago

Virginia Rath (1905-1950) was an American writer, educated at the University of California and active in San Francisco literary circles. She produced thirteen novels in two mystery series. The first series featured Rocky Allan, sheriff of a rural county not far from San Francisco. Allan first appears in Death at Dayton's Folly (1935). The second series, featuring couturier Michael Dundas, was set chiefly around San Francisco. Dundas first appears in The Dark Cavalier (1938). The second novel featuring Dundas brings him and his wife Valerie to the area where Rocky Allan is sheriff, and Dundas and Allan work together to solve the mystery surrounding a kidnapping in Murder with a Theme Song (1939). After this book Rath concentrated on Michael and Valerie Dundas. Eleven of the books were published under the Doubleday Crime Club imprint. The final two books were published by Ziff-Davis.

"Virginia Rath has, in the characters of Michael Dundas and his wife, Valerie, created as intriguing a couple as have appeared between the covers of a mystery story since the now historic The Thin Man." -- from the cover of Death Breaks the Ring.
