Clevely, Hugh as Tod Claymore - Reunion in Florida (1952)

We catch up again with Tod-Claymore-the-narrator when he takes his young daughter Sarah to visit on a Florida orange plantation. His ex-fiancee Sabrina is there too, and the waspish Poppy Langham, and there is a murder to be investigated by the deceptively languid Sheriff Judd. The story moves along nicely and there are flashes of humour, but there is very little to challenge the experienced reader, to whom the real state of affairs will be pretty obvious long before Claymore tumbles to it. The contrast between Claymore's English reticence and his two-fisted gun-toting activities is a little unsettling, and there are some moments when Clevely seems to have been reading too much Hammett: but a good read on the whole.
