| Sapper (1888-1937) was the pseudonym of Herman Cyril McNeile, a British writer. McNeile was born in Cornwall and educated at Cheltenham College and the Royal Military Academy Woolwich. He served in the Royal Engineers from 1907 to 1919 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He married Violet Douglas in 1914. |
Sapper is best known for his series character Hugh "Bulldog" (originally Bull-Dog) Drummond, the patriotic English hero who foils the plans of the evil Carl Peterson and others. He also wrote a series of stories about a more cerebral upper-class detective called Ronald Standish. After his death the Drummond series was taken over by Gerard Fairlie, who was allegedly the original model for the character.
