The House Without the Door

Daly, Elizabeth - The House Without the Door (1942)

Mrs Gregson has been acquitted of the murder of her husband, three years ago, but her reputation is in tatters. Now it appears that someone is out to kill off more than her reputation. Henry Gamadge is called in by his friend Colby to hear Mrs Gregson's tale of four apparent attempts on her life. Her husband's wealth appears to be the motive - but is it his niece, his adopted son or Mrs Gregson's companion who is after the reversion?

Gamadge's initial moves in the investigation are a little clumsy, and another death occurs. His assistant Harold has an important role to play. If the motive seems a trifle flimsy, at least it is all cleared up satisfactorily at the end. Another entertaining read from Elizabeth Daly.

Jon.
