The Sleeper

Roth, Holly - The Sleeper (1966)

Robert Kendall is a freelance journalist, called in to write up the serialised story of the year - the court-martial of Army Lieutenant Francis Hollister on a charge of treason. The story is written and the proofs have been sent to the paper for publication when Hollister commits suicide. Hollister has stolen a secret: but where has he hidden it? Hollister's friends come looking for the manuscript of the story at Burton's flat; then they search the apartment of Marta Wentwirth, the last place Hollister went before his arrest. What are they looking for? Why can't they wait till the story is printed? With the help of the FBI and the Counter Intelligence Corps, Kendall eventually solves the riddle.

The first part of the story is told in flashbacks - to Kendall's interviews with Hollister, to his meetings with Marta - and Roth is able to draw a convincing picture of the condemned fanatic, doing all he can to get his message out to his Communist compatriots. After that it becomes all thriller, with a touch of romance. Well-written and not without depth, if you can manage the implausible premise.
