The Allingham Case-Book

Allingham, Margery -- The Allingham Case-Book (1969)

A collection of eighteen stories that originally appeared from the 1930s to the 1960s, published after Margery Allingham's premature death at 62.

Besides the short Campion tale "The Borderline Case", which I had read before and has been anthologized in several collections, I thought there were three real standouts here: "Three Is a Lucky Number' and "They Never Get Caught," two prime examples of suspenseful inverted murder tales; and "One Morning They'll Hang Him," a Campion detective story originally published in 1950. I hate to praise the tale too highly, but it seems to be one of the finest true detective stories I have ever read. It shows what Margery Allingham could still do in the detective line post-WW2 when she troubled herself to try. The amount of real clueing by the author and astute thinking by Campion that is packed into 21 pages is truly impressive. Bravo!

Curt Evans.
