Appleby has taken early retirement after his marriage, and he has bought the yellow Bentley from the Yard in which he made his first appearance. In this case he is brought in as consultant to his friend, a local Inspector. The story is laid out in the manner of a classical play, with all the action, no matter how complicated its roots, taking place in a single night, and although melodramatic has its inspiration in Restoration comedy. Involves triplets, lost heirs, bigamy, arson, multiple murders, and peripatetic corpses. What happens to the butler, Swindle, is a comic variation on Dickens's Quilp scenario. Fun, but far-fetched.
