Death of His Uncle

Kitchin, CHB - Death of His Uncle (1939)

There are shrewd investigators, whose agile minds make leaps of intuition and logic. There are tough, two-fisted investigators who are handy with a gun and have an eye for the dames. And then there is Malcolm Warren. Warren is what you or I might be like as investigators: diffident, fretful, easily misled, but dogged and curious. Warren is a middle-aged, conservative stockbroker, but he has an intuitive streak which serves him well.

Death of His Uncle is Warren's third case: 'he' being his old acquaintance Dick Findlay, whose Uncle Hamilton has disappeared. Is it a jaunt or something more sinister? Dick and Warren drive off to Falmouth in Cornwall, his uncle's intended destination, and gradually retrace his movements. When the old man's clothes turn up in a cave near a dangerous bathing beach it appears there is no more to be done. But then Warren receives an anonymous letter and the investigation is on again.

Experienced readers will probably spot the major plot point fairly soon, but there are others that may slip by them. Suffice to say that Warren is not quite as gullible or indecisive as he seems. A slow-moving but enjoyable book.

Jon.
