Matthew Head was the pseudonym of American writer John Edwin Canaday (1907-1985). He was born in Kansas and educated at the University of Texas, Austin. He married Katherine Hoover in 1935 and served in the Marine Corps during WW2. Canaday was an art teacher, educator and critic. Some details of his views on art can be found here. Several of his books are set in Africa. His series character was Dr Mary Finney.
"Dr Mary Finney and Emily Collins are 'itinerant missionaries, with Miss Collins working the soul-and-hymn department while Miss Finney ministered to the flesh'. They, together with young Hooper Tolliver, the narrator, appear in several interesting and unusual detective novels by Matthew Head, set in or around Brazzaville in the Congo, where the author spent some time on a government mission during the Second World War."
