The Thriller -- Cover

The Thriller from September 5th, 1936 with the title-story by David Hume. From Flickr

David Hume was a pseudonym for John V. Turner (1900-1945), who also wrote under his own name and as Nicholas Brady. As Nicholas Brady he wrote several bizarre detective stories featuring the amateur botanist and sleuth Reverend Ebenezer Buckle. His other series sleuth (created under the Hume pen name) is Mick Cardby, a private detective in the hard-boiled vein.

Jon - I removed the bit about "Inspector Cardby" appearing on the stamp because it has never been verified that the figure in question is Hume's creation. Besides Mick Cardby is a private detective not a police officer. In fact several of those pictured on that illustration are still questionable as to their actual identity. One figure is thought to be alternately Reggie Fortune or Nero Wolfe. How's that for two completely different interpretations? Considering that the artist was Danish the books would have to have been known by Danish readers and I don't think Hume's books were ever translated. Besides the figure identifed as Cardby is quite obviously a police constable, not an inspector.
