Long, Amelia Reynolds

Page history last edited by J F Norris 11 years, 1 month ago

Amelia Reynolds Long (1904-1978) was an American writer and historian who also wrote under the names Adrian Reynolds and Patrick Laing, which was also the name of her investigator, a blind professor. A website tribute to her can be found here.

"A lot of mystery writers resented that hard-boiled school; I know I did myself. My agent tried to get me to write it, and I said I simply can't do it. To me the real mystery story is the mystery story with a good puzzle, and is not necessarily steeped in blood, and a lot of the mystery writers felt the same way. There was quite a division of thought there for some time."

Amelia Long was born in Columbia, Pa., and moved at the age of six to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She began her writing career with horror stories and science fiction, and began writing mysteries in 1939 with The Shakespeare Murders. In the late forties she hit a dry spell, and became an editor for college textbooks at Stackpole Books in Harrisburg. Afterwards she turned to poetry.

Between 1960 and her death Miss Long worked as a curator at the William Penn Museum in Harrisburg.
