Treat, Lawrence

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 1 month ago

Lawrence Treat was a pseudonym for Lawrence A Goldstone (1903-1998), an American writer. Goldstone was a New Yorker, who graduated from Dartmouth in 1924 and attained a law degree from Columbia in 1927. He worked as a lawyer, but then moved to Paris in 1928, and started to write mystery stories. He married Rose Ehrenfreud in 1943.

Treat wrote hundreds of short stories and 17 novels and was one of the founders of Mystery Writers of America. He received an Edgar for two of his titles: H as in Homicide (1965) and Mystery Writers' Handbook (1976). Treat also wrote for young readers. Later in his career he turned to non-fiction, including criminological studies, picture mysteries and a guide for mystery writers.

Among Treat's series characters are Commander Bill Decker, Carl Wayard, a professor of psychology, Mitch Taylor, a veteran police officer, and his sidekick, lab technician Jub Freeman.

A review of his work can be found at Books and Writers.
